Darbha is a tropical grass which is considered a sacred material even in the vedic scriptures. It is said to purify offerings made during rituals and ceremonies, This grass is placed in food items during eclipses which could ferment and then is removed after the eclipse is over. It was also used as a disinfectant as it was the only grass that acted as a disinfectant during the eclipses. When an eclipse takes place the blue and ultravioled radiations which are known for their natural disinfecting properties are not available in sufficient quantities due to which uncontrolled growth of micro organisms takes place in food products takes place during eclipses. Darbha is also an effective eco friendly food preservative. Researchers of the SASTRA University in Tamil Nadu also identified traditionsl tropical grass as a food preservative to be used. To find the fermenting property of this grass, they took five tropical grasses like Darbha, Lemon, Bermuda and Bamboo grass in the cow’s curd as it could ferment well. This study was jointly conducted by SASTRA and CeNTAB. It was found in the studies that this grass represented stunning nanopattern and other microstructures which was not found in other grasses. It was found that this grass could attract a high number of bacteria into the hierarchical surface features. It could be used as a food preservative instead of harmful chemical variety. It is also found that this grass gould be used in health care applications where sterile conditions are required. This show how advanced ancient Indian medicinal system was. More research needs to be done to unravel the mysteries yet to be found out.
