The ESIC or Employees’ State Insurance Corporation is one of the major organizations which has been providing healthcare and social security for employees in government and private sectors of various companies, organizations and firms for more than 65 years. It has thus played a major role in ensuring India’s prosperity by insuring the security of its workforce.

It has a variety of welfare schemes and offers a robust socio-economic protection to India’s large workforce. In addition to medical care, every insured worker under  ESIC is eligible for cash benefits and money pensions in case of contingencies of life, thereby ensuring their lifelong security.  Some of the benefits which employees are eligible when enrolled in ESIC are discussed here. Under the scheme SPREE – Scheme for Promotion of Registration of Employers and Employees all the establishments and factories who haven’t yet registered all their employees  under the scheme can do so till the 31st of March 2017. This gives a window of opportunity for those not included to be brought under the umbrella of the scheme thus increasing the benefit to a larger population of employees in all sectors.

The ESIC reach is huge as it has 151 hospitals, 1467 dispensaries, of these 159 are ISM Units, 948 patrol clinics, 42 ESIC annexes, 7898 insurance medical officers are present all serving 2.13 crore persons or family units having 8.28 crore beneficiaries.
