Author | Posts |
These Royal Plaques which are made of Brass and having a height of 48.5 – 52.5 cms. These are from Nigeria. They belonged to the Benin Empire and are of the Edo people of 16th century A.D. Brass was a valuable metal in the empire during those times and only the kings possessed it due to its value. The metal too became associated with the rulers due to its importance.
Brass was intimately associated with kingship in the Benin empire. Plaques cast by the lost wax process were used to cover the wooded beams that supported the roof in the royal palace. This particular building was the centre of the religious activities that controlled the well-being of the entire empire.
The plaques show scenes of court life and ritual pages which used to take place in the court, The brown copper color plaques here shows the kind of clothing worn by people of the kingly class during those times. The picture has two figures and the nudity there is completely contrasting with the splendid clothing and colorful attire which was worn. The coral-bead worn were of different colors and were a part of the costumes of royalty worn during those times.
A completely different history of a part of African continent which most of the world has not taken much of interest in except the historians. People think of Africa as the dark continent and fail to understand that there existed many empires and kingdoms which were equally interesting and worth visiting as one would visit any other part of the world as a tourist.
When we think of Africa we only remember of tourism, wildlife parks and nature. This is a small peek into the history which shows this continent has much more to offer for visitors, tourists and those wanting to know more about history. When readers would visit Africa for tourism think of this aspect to see too. There are many interesting places worth exploring and visiting during your next visit.

The African continent is one of the places where most probably the earliest humans evolved and started spreading all over the globe. The African continent is also known as the dark continent as not many people had been to the continent till the voyagers set sail. There were tribes who had there own set of customs, rituals and a way of life unique to them. There were many tribes many of which exist even today but the same time many of them have also disappeared with time during the course of history.
What was discovered and is being discovered is only but a fraction of the historic wealth lying in the continent waiting to be discovered by historians and to be placed before the entire world for them to know that such a kingdom or civilization existed and the lifestyle they led and the situation in those times when such people and kingdoms existed. We in today’s world are too tied up and find shortage of time to go through history and appreciate history.
Whatever I try to present is from a common mans perspective as the language will be simple and it will enthuse some interest in the early people who inhabited this planets and the kinds of kingdoms they had. If readers find this interesting and would want to know more then I would have succeeded in achieving my objective a bit. Hope you will enjoy the details. Enjoy the journey through the time machine. |
