The Egyptians are an ancient civilization in the world while everyone will be familiar about the Sphinx and Giza Pyramids, What you are going to read here is something different. This is about the Head of Amenophis III, having the colour of brown Quartzite with a height of 131 cms found in the Upper Egypt , Thebes of the Reign of Amenophis III of the 18th Dynasty during 1390 -1352 B.C. The ancient Egyptians believed that a statue acted as a dwelling for the non physical element of the individual whom it represented, allowing the Ka(spirit) resident within the statue to receive offerings. The actual image in those times strongly idealized and examples of true portraiture are very rare. Amenophis III reigned at the height of Egypt’s prosperity it was a golden era during that time.He is depicted in this brown image wearing the red crown of Lower Egypt. The sculptors have carefully exploited the variations in the colour of the stone, carving and polishing the surface selectively to emphasize and contrast different areas of the face. There are many more hidden treasures lying to be excavated. Many of them have already looted by the conquests of the Europeans and treasure hunters both local and foreign as dealing in antiquity is a big business. The above mentioned is lucky to have survived and been kept safely in a museum. For people interested in history to look at it and marvel at the works of the ancient Egyptians.
