A Seated Buddha, perhaps Maitreya made of Gilt bronze cast having a height of 28 centimeters from Nepal. Belonging to 10th century A.D. Unusually, this magnificent bronze sculpture depicts a Buddha image with the feet pendant. This sculpture looks shining and bright and has the left hand of the Buddha to his chest and the right hand gesticulating  towards the person in front by blessing him. We can see the statue in a seated form with both legs down clearly and the legs clearly visible through the robes.

This posture is sometimes taken to be a sign of Maitreya, the next Buddha in the line of which the historical Buddha, Gautama, was the most recent. The Buddha usually wears a monastic robe, as is seen here, a feature which often clearly reveals the body beneath it. The hair of the Buddha which is in curves is plaited in the usual style with a mound on the top.

The statue depicts him wearing a necklace. The eyes, eyebrows and the forehead and ears are clearly sculpted and visible from a distance. The face looks serene and represents calmness. The person looking at the sculpture also tends to get deeply involved with it and has a feeling of calm descend on him too.

This is a stylistic feature which, in India, reached back at least to the Gupta period. The Kathmandu Valley in Nepal is renowned not only for its high quality of metal workmanship, but also for the extent to which Indian styles continued long after they had fallen out of fashion in the lowlands. The Gupta inheritance of this image, although many centuries later, is still apparent.

Buddhism is an ancient religion and philosophy. The founder is Buddha or Shakyamuni. He was born as a royal prince in 624 B.C. in a place called Lumbini in present Nepal.
