In search of fame and fortune, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan (c. 1480-1521) set out from Spain in 1519 with a fleet of five ships to discover a western sea route to the Spice Islands. En route he discovered what is now known as the Strait of Magellan and became the first European to cross the Pacific Ocean. He  was born in Sabrosa, Portugal in 1480 into a noble family. After serving as a court page for two years, his adventurous spirit led him to the seas. He sailed under the flags of both Portugal and Spain.

He also first observed a previously unknown species of penguin. The five ships which set sail on the expeditiion weres (Trinidad, San Antonio, Concepción, Victoria, Santiago). They had 237 men. He was also hired by Spain, set off to sail around the southern coast of South America. He took part  in a number of Portuguese expeditions exploring and conquering the East Indies during the early 1500s. His voyage was the first to circle the globe. Sadly, Magellan did not live to see his success.

These are the greatest people especially explorers who took birth to do something remarkable and historic in their name as well as to their Country they were born in. Magellan though achieved the credit of the person who circled around the world first, he could not live long . Before Magellan, there were many who tried to take up an expedition around the world but could not succeed.  The later explorer could achieve something by discovering one place  instead of the other . One country instead of another.  It was again Vasco Da Gama who reached the Southern tip of India. Columbus tried to reach India but could reach India. However, they are all remembered for their great daring discoveries.

It’s really an informative article. It was very difficult for those voyagers to go on expeditions during the middle ages where there was only manual operations and no satellite technology and high tech equipment was available to them. I would have loved to be one among them and take part in such expeditions. Now a days despite the high level of shipping industry we still have ships sinking in the depths of the ocean. We have to appreciate the courage of those voyagers and mariners.. Keep writing more articles like this one..

Completely agree with you. Thank you for the adding some more information about the explorers in the remarks. It was very useful. There are a number of explorers to be written about which I would be doing so in future thanks for the support and the encouragement by replying to the article. Looking forward to hear from you about the other articles that I have written. You review about the topics helps in improving my writing and  giving readers better articles to be read and enjoyed. Best wishes and regards.  Krishna Kumar.
