Explorer and navigator Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa, Italy. His first voyage into the Atlantic Ocean in 1476 nearly cost him his life. Columbus participated in several other expeditions to Africa. In 1492 Columbus left Spain in the Santa Maria, with the Pinta and the Niña along side. The explorer Christopher Columbus made four trips across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain: in 1492, 1493, 1498 and 1502. He was determined to find a direct water route west from Europe to Asia, but he never did. Instead, he accidentally stumbled upon the Americas. He was a  citizen of the Republic of Genoa. Under the auspices of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain he conducted his voyages. He was an intrepid, driven ocean explorer.

The other famous explorers are Vasco de Gama, Marco Polo, Sir Ernest Shackleton and Leif Eriksson. He found the New World of the Americas on board his ship Santa Maria. Some researchers believe he is mistakenly credited for discovering the Americas first as many other have made the voyage before him. When he was young he sailed on trading ships. He became interested ships and voyages when he was a young boy. He has made his place in history as a voyager, explorer, discover and colonist by making his contribution,
