Born on October 27, 1728, in Marton-in-Cleveland, Yorkshire, England, James Cook was a naval captain, navigator and explorer. He was a taciturn mariner who would go on to circumnavigate the globe twice. He discovered much of the South Pacific for England. visited six of the seven continents in three voyages occurring between 1768 and 1779. In 1768 Cook was chosen to lead an expedition to the South Seas to observe the Transit of Venus. The Captain Cook Birthplace Museum marks the site of Cook’s birthplace in … is titled: ” A Sketch of the Life and Services of the Late Captian James Cook. From humble beginnings he became a national hero. He was in the Royal Navy and was renowned for his seamanship, surveying and exploring. He set sail on his voyages more than 250 years ago.
