Air India is India’s national carrier and is the country’s brand ambassador in the skies. It is a microcosm of India in the Air. A Puss Moth took to the sky from Karachi airport for Bombay via Ahmedabad on 15th October 1932 during the pre-independance era in the undivided India. Piloting this fledgling flight was a young man who was to pioneer civil aviation in India, J.R.D. Tata. Today Air India from 1948 till 2016 continues to be playing its role as the national carrier with full responsibility especially during the times of national emergencies, natural emergencies and during political disturbances in the neighbouring countries abutting India. The ‘Maharaja which signifies the brand of Air India is very famous. The airline has undergone many changes in its fleet equipment, navigation and even the uniforms and the airline design.

More than just the naational airline, Air india is also india’s cultural ambassador to the world. The decor, the music, the crew uniforms, all blend to create an Indian ambience and atmosphere. Air India has been a great promoter of India art and culture. Over the years, Air india has established one of the largest corporate collections of contemporary, classical and traditional art. The works are on display and can bee see in Air India’s booking and other offices around the world. The are a constant reminder of the richness of the traditiion in India’s heritage. It has a corporate policy to assist artists, craftsmen, and performers by sponsoring their travel – extending the horizons of not just the Visual, but also the Performing Arts. This has not only promoted Indian culture across the globe, but has also brought a variety of cultural activities to India. It was essentially the ancient travel routes that linked civilizations. It was from traversing these routes, whether it was the eenterprising trader, the curious traveller or the pious pilgrim who ventured beyond their known domain to seek the unknown there emerged and developed contact between distant cultures and civilizations. India over the centuries and  through Air India continues to play the role of an interface with different cultures from other parts of the world. It is interesting to know that the most impressive civilizations happens to be those which borrow and lend their languages, technologies, artefacts and beliefs. Air India continues to play this role both on the air and on the ground to the best of its ability and will do so for many more years to come.
