The festival of kites Sankranti also called the festival of Uttaryan is fast approaching and we will have lots of colorful kites soaring and dotting the sky all over the country. It is the festival of harvest and reflects life in different colors which are vibrant in the form of kites. There will be numerous kite festivals held which will have competitions too.
This is a happy occasion for children especially as they wait for the festival with great anticipation and the whole families of the country, which they have every right to celebrate. We all will be able to see hundreds of different varieties of kites as the festival has gone global.

But there are problems which come in the form of eletrocution of children flying kites, people falling from buildings, accidents, injuries occuring on the streets and roads to motorists and passersby as a result of negligence. All this happens because of not following safety norms and precautions and elders not being their with children who are too exited and involved in kites without noticing the dangers lurking nearby. Cuts to the fingers due the manja or thread used to cut other’s kites which is glass coated and also sunstroke due to continuous exposure to heat, dehydration due to low water intake are some other problems regularly faced year after year.

There is also the Chinese glass coated manja with is as good as wire and do not break or snap and stay on trees and other places for months. Many peoples throats have also got cut and they have died when riding bikes or bicycles. So say no to Chinese glass coated manja which is banned and illegal in our country. The Indian variety is also harmful for birds but it does snap and is a lesser problem but is a problem though. Say no to use of manja howsoever tempting it may be to use it to cut others kites.

If you have any concern for our winged friends and for your safety avoid manja and fly kites with cotton thread which is safe and eco friendly and is readily available in the market. This is very safe for all. Have a safe sankranti and share this information with friends if you have concern for birds as there are many migratory birds which arrive and will be flying at heights due to change of season and also you will be surely concerned about you children’s and others safety.

Wishing you, family and friends a happy kite festival Sankranti in advance. Fly lots of kites with no manja and make it safe for birds and for others too. Enjoy kites, eat good food, music, go to temples do poojas and catch up with friends and make relationships stronger as life has become too fast paced and mechanical. Festivals are meant to enjoy, pray, eat goodies, spend time with self, family, friends and society. They also help our mind, body and soul get recharged for the work and challenges which we are going to face.
They act as a tonic so go ahead and enjoy it this year too. But do spare a thought for birds who make life colorful to us all 365 days of the year. Life without them will be dull and empty so take care of them. You can also start a hobby or interest of observing and learning about them which many of my friends are already doing and are happy and enthusiastic about it. Readers share this article with friends and make it a truly memorable one this year.
