Mourya Empire was the first largest empire of India. It’s territory reached to Afghanistan .The mighty kings of this empire made this a strongest empire of its time.It had a vast army to control. It seems it will be never ended. But it is said no kingdom is forever. In politics anything is not fix but changes due to time.So same happened in the case of Mourya Empire. The last king of this dynasty Brihadrath was killed by his commander Pushyamitra Shunga. He started the dynasty after the fall of Mourya Empire was called Sunga dynasty. He changed the capital of his capital from PataliPutra to Ayodhya. Soon the vast Mourya Empire divided into three parts. Thus the fate of this kingdom met to its death.

It is believed that Pushamitra Sunga was a Saivite Brahmin Commander-in-chief of Bruhadratha who was encouraging Buddhism and even punishing those who do not follow the principles of Buddhists. At the same time, the Buddhism also had experienced internal squabbles. There were two branches one is called Hinayana and the other Mahayana. In spite of that, both were experiencing the Royal patronage and it was Hinduism which was in a delicate position for its survival though possessing vast scriptures of Vedas, Brahmanas, Suktas, Great Epics. As it was losing the patronage and the cruelties were growing more and more on non-Buddhists a timely massacre of Brihadratha put an end to the dynasty of Mauryas and subsequently drugged the grave for Buddhism which was by that time became almost similar to Hinduism. |
