Tigers belong to the big cat species and are a threatened lot and face extinction. The year 2017 has started on a bad not for tigers in India of which it is the national animal. Hope these amazing facts will generate interest among the common man when you share the same and will create awareness among them of the need to save this magnificent species.

1)  Tiger is the biggest species of the cat family and can reach a length of around 3.3 meters or 11 feet, their weight will be around 330 kilograms or 660 pounds.

2)  It is a mammal and a carnivore and has a life span of around 10 to 15 years in the wild and up to 20 years in captivity.

3) They prefer hunting wild boars, deer, frogs, monkey’s, porcupine  and the like but are capable of taking prey which are more than their size easily. A large number documentation exists of tigers hunting a larger prey.

4) They are very good at camouflage and the black stripes on their body provide them with the same. They hide behind thick long grass or bushes thus providing the element of surprise in their attack.

5) Unfortunately all the parts of the tigers body are used by wildlife traffickers to sell the same for the purpose of medicines which is nothing but quackery due to ignorance of humans. So a big market exists for tiger parts or products which is illegal.

6)  White tigers get their color as a result of genetic mutation. But are also healthy as the other ones.

7)  Tiger are typically nocturnal animals and lead solitary lives. They require a large territory which they mark and protect it from others.

8)  The brain of a tiger weighs around 300 grams and its roar can be heard as far as 3 kilometers away. They are a very adaptable predator and their diet is diverse.

9) Unfortunately many of the tigers are owned by the rich in their houses as their pets which is not at all the right thing for a tiger as it is born to wild. According to one figure there are more tiger being kept as pets than their are in the wild.

10)  The Bengal tiger known by its species name Panthera Tigris Tigris is the most populous one in the world. But their numbers are only around 25oo to 3000 in the wild. And they are being poached, killed due to  man animal conflicts, wrong methods like drug overdose  adapted while trapping or tranquilizing them, traps, electric fences, poisoning, injuries in fights with other tigers etc.,
