Conservation – Wildlife – In Black And White Patterns

Imagine the closely packed hexagonal cells of a honeycomb, or the vibrantly coloured eyelike markings on a peacock’s feather. Do you see interesting patterns? Our natural world is alive with impressive patterns in vivid colours. Some like the wind blown ripples formed on the surface of sand in deserts are dynamic. While few others like the concentric rings formed on the cross section of a tree trunk develop slowly but are just as fascinating. Some of the most wonderful patterns in nature come in shades of black and white. The most impressive example being a zebras coat. The alternating light and dark striped markings on the animals coat catch the eye with its regularity and beauty. Just as each human being has a unique fingerprint, each zebra has a unique pattern of stripes. These patterns have a function, the stripes blend together when zebras move in large groups and make it difficult for predators to single out individuals that they can stalk. Another interesting example of this black and white pattern found in nature is the adelie penguin. Found along the entire Antarctic coast and nearby islands. This penguin stands out for its tuxedo like colouration. The birds head, back and the top of its flippers are black, while its chest, belly and underside of the flippers are white. This unique combination gives the bird the appearance of being dressed in natures version of a dinner suit. Similarly, the Arctic tern, a small migratory bird with white body and grey upper wings is adorned with a natural black cap. Several other birds and animals have strikingly patterned plumages and distinctive markings in black and white. Some of the example of these patterns are avocets, stilts, orcas and giant pandas. Diverse patterns occur throughout nature. For instance, geomatric pattern like honey comb, spotted pattern as in the case of a leopards coat, striped pattern in the case of a zebras coat and rippled pattern as seen on sands in deserts. But the ones that stand out clearly and never cease to fascinate are the ones in contrasting shades of black and white. As this pattern is found in a variety of life forms and serving a important purpose that is helping it in its fight for survival. If we observe in all the things nature has there is something marvellous to be discovered like the pattern especially the black and white pattern.
