The banded krait (Bungarus fasciatus) is a species of elapid snake found on the Indian Subcontinent and in Southeast Asia. It is one of the largest kraits. This snake is feared all over India and Pakistan because of the many deaths from its bite.

The banded krait (B. fasciatu).  No snake kills with more ruthless efficiency than the many-banded krait, which dwells in the jungles of India and Southeast Asia. The Banded Krait occurs in a variety of habitats including forests, agricultural and marshes. It feeds on other vertebrates including rodents, lizards and other snakes.

They generally stay away from human population unless there is some prey by which it is attracted or someone steps on it on a open field or an open ground by mistake it will give a deadly bite. There are found in places which are near near to jungles or forest area or marshy lands or any such place where food it available in plenty.

When we come across any snake we should always maintain a safe distance from it and should not create movements or sounds as snakes can gauge distance from where movement is happening through vibrations on the ground. Try to call forest department or the Friends of Snakes Society in your locality. Never try to kill or handle the snake on you own as it can prove costly.

Snakes population helps us by keeping a check on rodents, mice and other birds which damage the crops of the farmers. The also eat eggs of birds thus act as check on their population growth. One more interesting species of snake to study and know more about.
