Children are innocent hence and very vulnerable. Especially in today’s world where we have problems and risk at all places. Unfortunately we cannot say that some particular is safe for children. That is the stage we are in. Here is the first set of ten things children should be careful of.

1) Do not give too much of money, any  cards, mobile phones and put jewellery  on children as they can be hurt seriously if someone tries to snatch it and if they try to resist.

2) When going out for shopping or to a mall do not leave children locked in the car. There are many instances of deaths caused due to lack of oxygen as they were locked for a long time and they died as a result of getting asphyxiated.

3) When there is a heavy downpour see that someone elder is there when children come from school as water filling in ditches, and trenches for construction and for laying pillars at sites and manholes which are open can be potential death traps.

4) Teach children about the power and dangers of electricity and how they have to be at a safe distance and protect themselves against receiving any shocks especially during rainy seasons.

5) Tell children not to go near water bodies which are big like ponds, lakes, rivers and streams seas or oceans alone or with friends of their age as it looks very inviting but one can end up meeting a watery grave. As many even if they know how to swim it is not a safe place.

6) Take children into confidence and tell them to inform you where they are going and by what time will they return and whether there is a contact number and name of the person who will be there with whom they are going to spend time. See that the environment is safe for the child.

7) When flying kites be with children as there is every risk of the child being too involved in the kite flying above and having accidental falls from the upstairs. Many deaths and injuries occur in India due to this and some are a serious lifelong disability or even lead to death.

8) Keep matchbox, lighters, incense sticks and any inflammable things away from their reach as children try to imitate elders and would want to learn as part of the learning process. The risk being they do this when alone or inside closed doors.

9) Keep things like kerosene, petrol, fire extinguisher and any other such objects away from children and teach them about the potential risks of handling them and that they should stay away from such thing when adults are using them.

10)  While crossing the street be there with them, if it is not possible tell them to take the help of any aged elderly people or women as they are generally safe or cross in a group from the zebra crossing. Tell them to keep an eye on all vehicles when crossing as drivers can be reckless too. Train them in this before allowing them to go alone.
