Yes, Ashoka is a very important king in Indian history. He overcame many struggles when he was young and reached the position where he ultimately reached. One more thing why he personality was what it was is because he had faced fratricide as there were constant fights among different brothers for the becoming the next ruler. Many attempts were made to kill him in this game of getting the throne and becoming the future ruler. The queens also played a major role in this and so did some courtiers.
The killing of his brothers was a process of self preservation which he had to do as he was left with no choice as otherwise he himself would become a victim. Regarding the wars Ashoka fought he had won many of them but the battle of Kalinga where rivers of blood flowed, children wailing for their dead parents, wifes crying near the dead bodies of their husbands killed in the war, the whole city destroyed and livestock too killed and the death of his own men in the war and the same scene at the side of the victorious people too seemed ironical and set him thinking of what use is winning if this is the price one has to pay by sacrificing his people to kill others and get lands and kingdoms.
Though late this realization changed the mind of Ashoka. He then spread the path of virtuous living, nonviolence and worked for the welfare of the people. He also constructed many viharas(place to live when in transit) for tourists, travelers and traders which too became famous and well liked by people. There are many more things which can be written about Ashoka which will be done in another article. |
