Recently, the garabage disposal department had implemented a new rule about separating the garbage into different catogaries.

We consumers are required to separate them before discarding them into the garbage bins.

Otherwise, the garbage disposal collectors would not collect them at the desire time.

For example:

Food waste, baby diapers, adult diapers and sanitary pads are required to be disposed in a black plastic garbage bag, tied up, put into the garbage bin.

It will be collected by the disposal collectors on every Sunday and Wednesday only.

Dry items such as recycle trash ( paper, plastic, bottles/glass), polyform) are supposed to be dumped into another black garbage bag, placed OUTSIDE of the garbage bin.

It will be collected on every Tuesday by a small garbage truck.

Hence, they will not open up the garbage bin to check for anything.

This is a good move to separate the garbage items into different categories so that the disposal collectors would be using less manpower and quickly dispose the garbage in the shortest time.

At least the garbage collectors are coming 3x a week, better than previously when they come ONCE a week!!

Separation of garbage is the best way to clear your bins. it’s good to separate the garbage that way it’s easy to burn what needs to be burnt, use the left overs as manure if you have a small garden you could use it there. and the rest goes where it should go.

We sort out that which can be handed over to garbage collectors which is mostly solid waste, such as plastic bags.  The wet garbage mainly kitchen waste, weeds and twigs are dumped in compost pits.

I have also used solid waste such as broken glass, stones, crockery, plastic bags as filler for foundations for garden artifacts.

We do not have Garbage separation at House level, but in some Indian cities this has been started on a pilot basis, and it will take time to get going at a bigger level.

very good tips

Here in our country had just started to educate citizens to separate trash into different categories.

Now, twice a week, the garbage truck will collect wet waste trash while once a week collect dry trash such as recycle items ( plastic, polyform, cardbox, glass, tin cans, broken flower pots, tire, etc)

wow, you did well with the broken items, very creative and unique.

However, how do food waste co=operate with compost?

Doesn’t it becomes maggots, worms, ants, etc?

In my city, Solid Waste Management is strictly implemented. The garbage that is not segregated will not be picked up by the garbage collectors. They will leave it behind. I guess self-discipline is strongly recommended to the local people. Our city is considered the cleanest and greenest tourist trap in my country. That’s the reason why the city government officials are monitoring the proper garbage disposal.

@peachpurple Do you mean the garbage collectors used to go to your housing area only once a week? Has it been like that always? It is always 3 times a week here – Monday, Wednesday and Friday, even in my home town (Ipoh) when I was young.

I think it is good to separate the garbage, so more garbage can actually be recycled, but I did not know there are different days to collect different types of garbage. Moreover, do you have to use black garbage bags? We do not buy those black garbage bags, but just use those normal plastic bags that we got from shopping.

I am glad we do not need to do the garbage separation according to the standard you mentioned, though I am not sure when it will be implemented in the state I am staying. I do separate the garbage – those cannot be recycled and those can be recycled. I pack those items that can be recycled separately according to their categories too.

Once every week a layer of soil needs to be placed over the garbage and that takes care of maggots and stuff.  Ants could be taken care of with a mild insecticide.  Your waste food is a great contributor for compost.

@ peachpurple We do not have such guidelines here. However I always use two different dustbins. One for kitchen waste and other one for the general waste. I hand it over to the garbage collector in the same manner but I doubt if the garbage collector pays heed to garbage segregation.

Yes, we are advised to separate our garbage to bio to nonbio because the ones that contains plastic is transfer to recycling program of the city. We need to separate the garbage, especially the plastic ones as some are using it on baranggay programs. We also need to clean it. If we don’t want to transfer it to garbage collector, we can keep it all at home and sell it to those individual people who are buying plastic for recycling. That is what my mother is doing.

In our city, every barangay was given a MRF or the material recovery facility wherein people will put their garbage there. The garbage collector scheduled the days when they will collect the garbage in each barangay. For instance, in our barangay, the scheduled day for garbage collection is during thursday. And garbages will not be going to be collected if they are not segregated accordimg to biodegradable and non biodegradable.

Here in Hyderabad, the Garbage collectors will be collecting the garbage regularly except on Sundays. They are doing a very good job. Here the Department has provided two baskets to each household. One is red and another is blue in color.

All solid items have to be dumped in a red basket. All stuff containing some liquid in them have to be kept in a blue basket. The collector comes early in the morning and empties the both baskets.

Added to this, there is a Van comes once in  every 15 days and collects the residual items if any.

This is really a good move taken by the department. We should all keep our houses clean and germ-free and at the same time should keep the surrounding clean.

Modiji’s Swatch Bharat campaign has got a very good response from the people of Hyderabad.
