How do you call your mom and dad?

At home, I call my mom ” Ma” and dad “Pak” Usually, local children young and old call their ; mom: Ma, Mak, Mummy, Mi, Mama dad: Pa, Pak, Daddy, Di, Papa My kids call me ” Mi” short form for Mummy while they call their dad “Daddy” in full format.
However, adults children in the household call their parents” Father and Mother” instead! Weird isn’t it?

I used to call my mum as Ma and when I felt too excited I would call her Amma but my father was always a Papa and I used to call him Papa JI. Here Ji is sign of respect in our part of the world and we use it after names to anyone whom we respect. |

I call my parents in Cantonese, papa or pa, mama or ma. My children call me mama, and call the dad papa. But sometimes I don’t know why they like to call me mommy. 🙂 |

I thought in cantonese , dad should be ” Lou tao” Mom – Ah Ma But nowadays, mommy and daddy are common |
|
Well, I don’t call them, they call me. As for my own kid, she always uses normal terms like ‘mom’ and ‘dad’ so nothing special. |

I call my parents “Mama” & “Papa” You’re right @peachpurple I noticed that too most kids nowadays call their parents mommy and daddy. |
|
@rapidblue so, you just talk to them, no greetings in the morning, etc? how do you greet them when you call them on the phone? |
|
@peachpurple We actually speak mandarin at home, but when we call our parents, we do not call them in the Mandarin pronunciation but Cantonese. I don’t call them Lou Tou or Ah Ma, but just baba & mama, similar to Mandarin, but different tone. 😀 Yes, I think nowadays many kids call daddy and mommy, and I think that’s why my little girl followed too. Or perhaps she learned it while I read her some picture books in English. @rapidblue I am curious how you call your parents too.

@peachpurple My home town is in Ipoh, most people there speak Cantonese as well. But, my family speak Mandarin at home, so I can speak better in Mandarin than in Cantonese, though there are still some terms we use in Cantonese. 😀 |
