World Press Freedom Day Every year 3rd May is celebrated as the World Press Freedom Day as proclaimed by the UN General Assembly which was started in December 1993, as per the recommendation of UNESCO’s General conference. This day is celebrated to honor the importance of the freedom of the press and as a reminder to the government that it is the duty to honor and respect the press’s freedom of expression. On this day, UNESCO honors the deserving individual or organization or institution who has done some extraordinary works and contributions in defending or promoting the freedom of press anywhere in the world by giving the Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. This was first given in the year 1997 by the UNESCO. This honorary prize was named after Guillermo Cano Isaza. He was a Columbian journalist assassinated in front of his newspaper office EL Espectador in Bogota on December 17, 1986. His writings had helped in defending Columbia’s mighty drug mafias.

@cely Thank you. Happy press freedom day top all. I think this is one of the important days to be celebrated among all the other days. The press plays a major role in expressing the thoughts and they are the people’s voice. They have the power to create leaders or to divide parties and create chaos. Some take this as a job and some take this as their passion. Once I too had the dream of becoming a journalist but ended up in engineering. 🙂 |
