When you pray to God ( regardless of religion) , do you make promises ?

Let’s say that you are praying the your love one’s health to recover and in return you promised God that you will volunteer in old folks home.

Do you make promises to God and accomplish the task after He had answered your prayer?

Do you feel that it is necessary to make promises or vice versa?

What is your opinion?

I am guilty of giving promises as I like to do it before but I always disappoint God. I do not make promises to God, but what I do is to help people, friends or stranger. I only give back my blessings, which are the answered prayers, through helping other people as much as I can. I also pray for people who needs it, very consistent on that one.

guilty!!!

I do.

I always say I will do this and I will do that,.

I do anyway but not for very long.

I find more excuses than reasons. Especially when I’ve already what I asked for…

At times I find myself making such promises and It is a habit I really want to stop since most of the time I end up not doing what I promised God I will do

@Christi Ann I also do that. I end up either doing little or nothing of what I promised I will do which is not a good thing at all

I use to, but promises are made to be broken.  I just ask for help and in return I “do” things that God would be proud of ne for doing.  After all actions speak louder than words!!

@grecy095

good response sis!

yeah, I guess that everyone does ask for God’s help in critical and nick time. Make empty promises or maybe accomplish the task just for once and forget about the whole thing.

You pray for others too? That is so noble of you. I do to, pray for the poor, the sick, those people who are suffering somewhere in the world.

My cathecism nun used to say: Pray for others, not for yourself.

but then, I always pray for both. Myself and for others.

Recently, I asked God for help and promised HIM that I would donate to the poor.

HE did answered my prayer and I did the donation as I had promised.

@slayer08

Guilty as a cat that stole a fish?

Yeah, I can understand your guilt.

me too, sometimes, I could accomplish the task but not for long.

It takes a lot of determination to keep a promise.

Sometimes, it is better off not to promise at all.

@heroine

yes, it is really hard to break a bad habit for sure!

@4cryingoutloud/

promises made to be broken, LOL? A good one my friend.

Kids made empty promises, so do we adults.

When we ever learn not to hurt God and others, eh?

Yes, sometimes we do something else instead to replace our promises.

Thanks for sharing

@peachpurple I do that too, donating, but with the church. I also have individual groups that send students to school or buy their school supplies. We have that before and every time we received a blessing, we give money to our account, deposit and send someone to school once we saved an ample amount. That is how I share my blessings.

@grecy095/

that is cool sis!

You are doing a grand job, like an angel.

I wish I could donate through church services but I don’t visit the church anymore since I was married to my Buddhist hubby.

It is impossible for me to take a taxi to the church everytime unless someone can give me a lift, and I don’t drive.

Furthermore, my mother-in-law disapprove me visiting the church.

So, I donate in my own way.

@peachpurple I am a Muslim so my answer is based on what i have learned from our Holy book, the Quran and the words of our Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

I believe that making a promise/vow to God that i will do something and then not do it is not a light matter. There are two reasons for this:

Let’s say someone I love is sick and I promise God that i will feed a poor everyday so he gets better. I don’t think it is right to make charity conditional. Actually it is considered the way of a miser because it shows that it is difficult for me to part ways with my money even for sake of someone I love unless I get something in return.

Suppose the person does not get well. Will it be right for me not to feed the poor? The right way would be to feed the poor, give charity to please God and then ask for His blessings.

In Islam, we believe that feeding and clothing a poor are the best forms of charity anyway and doing this keeps many troubles away.

Secondly, our aim should be to please our God and not indulge in business transactions with Him, by saying If you give me this, I will do this type of things.

Making empty promises postpones the good deeds and make them conditional upon getting the desired result. It is better to be charitable at all times and keep on praying to God for health, wealth and all our worldly needs without conditions.

@dawnwriter/

thanks for your share. Yes every religion teaches followers to do good, donate, to love one another be it strangers or people that you know.

I do agree with you that making empty promises is not ideal but people are still doing them because they couldn’t control themselves.

Of course it is better not to make promises. Just perform the good deeds based on your heart filial, your own obligation, nobody is putting the gun on anyone’s head.

That is why I try not to make “hard to accomplish” promises.

I would feel bad when I can’t accomplish them either.

But I am glad that ISlam had taught its followers the right way.

Kudos.

Assalamu Alaykum’ (peace be upon you)

 @peachpurple It is easy to get desperate and make empty promises.

Being a  mother I know that when one of my children is unwell, I feel very tense and yes, in that state it is easy to make so many empty promises and vow never to do anything bad again but this is not a long term solution.

The best way is to do a little charity each day and keep praying for better things and for God’s help and blessings in times of trials.

Walaikum assalam (and peace be upon you too)

@peachpurple Whenever I pardon for help to God, I don’t promise. I usually sacrifice by delaying eating a meal. This old practice was shared by my granny. It seems weird. The explanation is simple. Before Jesus Christ died in a crucifix, he asks a favor to God. That is, to forgive the people because they don’t know what they are doing.

Yes I must say I am one of those people who used to do that a lot but after learning more about how God operates and how he does his things I realized that God doesn’t need our help in anything he can do it by himself. and God is not a receptor of persons when he say he will do something for you all you have to do is just obey him and let him do the rest that’s it.
