When I was still working in the government agency, I see to it that my tasks will be on time based on the milestone given to us. I must admit that there is so paperwork piled every day on my desk. I sometimes bring it at home just to finish everything. However, the final output will also depend on the performance of the team. I had seen some of my teammates are not working hard during my stay in the agency. Most of their tasks are being delayed.

As I expected, I am always in the leading of accomplishing my tasks. That’s the reason why I take a slow pace to let the other team cope up with the upcoming deadline. Despite all their cramming effort, I anticipate that they can’t make it. Since I don’t want to have a low evaluation and I took the liberty to help them.

I had continued to support the team for 8 months. Then, I finally decided to file my resignation. The reason, I cannot endure the way of taking advantage of me. They are so ungrateful and I had learned my lesson. How about you? Are you willing to take extra work?

I’d be wiling to take some type of extra work but not to the extent that you described. It happened to me a number of times before and over time, I learned to speak up to talk to my manager when things are not sitting well with me. So when I feel that work is piling up, I let the manager know and tell them I can finish the work but not on the timeline they forecasted as it is basically only one person doing the entire thing. Often times, the a bit of work is lifted from my plate. I am not lazy and in fact I work fast. But I don’t think it’s fair to work on something that other people should be doing.

@cessy08 I had learned my lesson that time. Even when I left the team, they kept on sending messages or calling me. The reason, they don’t know what to do. As I had mentioned, most of their vital tasks done by me. What a pity of them! I never responded when they tried to reach me out.

I can take on more work but I will not allow others to get credit for the work I do.

I do not make anyone to make use of me to do their work.

If the work leads to recognition or more salary or promotion, I do not mind doing more.

There is no point doing more if there is no reward for it.

@scheng1 That’s the reason why I decided to push away myself from the team. The credit goes to our incompetent leader. It was really terrible to work with them. I am competitive person and don’t want to dwell with leeches.

You have gained wisdom and experience out of this bad episode in your life.

I think you will be more careful in future.

Always make it known to your boss, and the boss of your boss that you have done a lot of work, never allow anyone to take away your credit.

@Shavkat  Nope I am fine with my current workload. Actually I am programmer. So I have to keep writing those codes with almost all attention. So it is really mentally stressful to work more on the same. And also during my free time in the office I used to work on these online sites. So I don’t want to left it either. That’s why whatever going on right now is just perfect for me. I don’t want to take more load by taking more work. And I hope my office will not provide me more either, otherwise I will not have any choice.

@anand I agree. Based on my experience, I will just take my contract to be reviewed if it is necessary to have an extra workload. If not, I will not do it. I would prefer to have a black and white agreement than asking favor to do extra tasks. I think it is not fair to be abused by insensitive people.

@Shavkat  Yes you can always refer your contract. And if there is nothing related to extra work and if you are not comfortable with it then you have rights to tell them about the same.

August 13, 2016 at 3:59 pm

@scheng1 I take note of that. I will be more vigilant with these people. That would be the last thing for me to handle.

@anand Yes, it is better to know our own rights.

I agree with @scheng1/

I can work extra time for the team but don’t expect me to keep quiet when someone else takes the whole credit for the success

Team work leads to success, if it happens to m, I would fight for my rights and demand for my credits

@shavkat: That’s the thing about being overly reliant on just a single person to do the job. I am not sure how come employers think that these “prized” employees would stay given they are often abused with too much workload, not enough credit or not given rightful compensation. It is good that you don’t respond anymore to their calls for help. Maybe if they treated you better, you would’ve responded but given the experience you had it was only fair play you didn’t.

@peachpurple Don’t worry. When I had my exit interview with the agency, I had said my own piece why I need to go. All the credits are not for these people. Most of the work should be credit with particular members of the team. My loser boss is not competent enough to take his role. I am sorry to say this, but it is true.

@cessy08 I totally agree with that. I can’t give my service for free. They need to accept their responsibilites and find ways to improve their weaknesses. At this point of time, some of their projects plank into the ditch.
