 Hanging – pixabay free photo Duterte, the president-elect of the Philippines in the just concluded May 9 elections, has made public that the death penalty might be revived. It is now the subject of the debate among the concerned people of the Philippines. Some believe that death penalty could prevent the commission of heinous crimes, rapes, drugs, among others. Others said that death penalty would be morally wrong. Those countries that imposed capital punishment to the guilty criminals, don’t deter or even stop the commission of various crimes. For all we know, those who have been convicted to suffer the death penalty are innocent. They were the victim of discrimination, miscarriage of justice especially the poor. It was in June 2006 when capital punishment was abolished by Republic Act No. 9346 by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for “it had not proven to be a deterrent to crime and had become a dead-letter law.” Now, the President-elect Duterte wants it to be restored by hanging the criminals, not a lethal injection which had been implemented before. What do you think?

| I would like to say I am not in favor of it. I know that killing a criminal is just as wrong as a criminal killing an innocent person. However, I also know that if one of my family members or close friends were murdered, raped or molested by another, I would want the person who did it dead and dead soon. Not only that, our prisons are extremely overpopulated here in the United States. Our taxes are supporting them and many of them are given privileges they do not deserve even though they are behind bars. I do not think prisoners should have televisions, outdoor time, conjugal visits or any of the luxuries that people who do not lead a life of crime. However, many of them do. So, with that being said, yes, I guess I am in favor of the death penalty. That is, as long as there is not even a shadow of doubt that the person is guilty. You hear of people that were found innocent after spending many years in prison. Although, I do believe that we have many, many more guilty people in prison today than innocent. People are just plain evil in our world and if they take a life, they do not deserve to keep their own life. | |

First, if I or a family becomes a victim I believe I will only be in peace once I’m sure that the criminal will no longer have another chance of hurting another. Second, prisons do not necessarily reform a criminal since criminals have a different mentality compared to normal people. Third, I don’t see the Justice system in the Philippines doing something about criminals and it’s about time that the government does. I know death penalty will not resolve anything but it can serve as a warning to other criminals that there’s a system that out to get them. In Japan, prisoners in death row don’t know their execution dates which leaves them sleepless (I bet) and remorseful for what they’ve done. Fourth, I don’t like the idea that imy taxes or part of it helps maintain prisons. We do pay for its existence and I think we have a say on what should be done with those guilty ones after all, these criminals took it upon themselves to do harm on people maybe it’s time to show them no mercy. I’m sorry I’m a bit biased and I am one sided on this take, that’s because I believe that everyone should be able to walk safe within their country’s streets without the fear of anyone. |
| I am very much in favour of death penalty if it is established without a doubt that the person is guilty of murder. I also feel very strongly that rapists should be given death penalty too. I have read new reports of people raping girls and boys as young as 2-3 years old and I think these people have no right to live. Nowadays it has become common for rich and influential to hire pricey lawyers who get them out on medical reports or they stay behind bars in luxurious conditions with more rights than common people. The justice should start from the top and then only people will feel that justice is same for rich and poor. And maybe they will think before committing heinous crimes.

| @slayer08 I agree with you 100%. Terrible crimes are committed in prisons by hardened criminals and jail wardens and these people become even more hardened and cruel by the time they get out. I think if 10-15 murderers, terrorists and rapists were hanged every month, the crime rate would drop significantly. There are many people who commit crimes for fun or thrill. In our country there used to be a motorcycle gang a few years ago who snatched purses, mobile phones etc usually from girls and women, One woman got shot in front of her kids while resisting. When the culprits were caught, it was found they were sons of rich people who had no need to do these things. The problem is no one is afraid of the law and justice has become a joke, especially for the rich people.

There was a rape case much in news in India a few years back where six men brutally raped a young woman in a moving bus. Not only this, the woman and her boyfriend was badly beaten up and they were thrown naked out of the moving bus in the chilly winter night and left to die. They were found lying by the deserted road by the police hours later. The young woman who was only 23 years old died of injuries thirteen days later. Medical reports later said that she suffered serious injuries to her abdomen, intestines and genitals due to the assault, and doctors said that the damage indicated that an iron rod my have been used for penetration. This brutal and inhuman gang rape in the country’s capital shook the country and people came on roads demanding justice for the deceased woman. However, one of the rapists was juvenile and due to Indian law, juveniles can’t be given death penalty. He was given just three years of imprisonment in a reform facility ad per law and earlier this year, he was released. Can you imagine- just three years imprisonment for taking a human life? Human rights are only for the criminals but not for the victims. Such rapists should be hanged till death. They are not worth mercy. |
| To quote the comic Ron White – people are voting against the death penalty and Texas just put in an express lane! I’m totally in favor of it and I think the US takes to long to put people to death. You murder someone or molest a child, I think you get one appeal and if you lose – out in front of a firing squad the next morning at dawn. Gets rid of the scum and cuts down on the cost of prisons. | |
| @s-stephens Killing a criminal is wrong and prisons are over populated. People’s taxes are spent to support the criminals in the prison and for the maintenance of the prison. They are seemed to be impractical. That is correct. We have the same situation here like yours. But what we can do? As an ordinary citizen of our country, what else we can do, then? | |
| @slayer08 Everyone is also aiming for that, for a peaceful, safe community to live. But it seems impossible to have it in the chaotic world where we live. People fight to survive. Government is incapable to provide for the needs of its people. So as with the peace and order which couldn’t be attended to. So we’ve nothing option to recommend but to impose death penalty. What a pity to those innocents! | |
| @swalia It was one of the most shocking incidents ever to happen. Rape is very common and again it is because there is no fear of the law in the hearts of men. They consider themselves immune because they think a) they will get away with it b) the woman and her family will be too disgraced or afraid to complain c) even if they get caught, the case can drag for years, evidence and witnesses disappear and the culprit can be out on bail to do whatever he wants next. It is sickening, disgusting and horrible. More and more people should speak up. As a Pakistani, one of the most shameful cases for me was when a young man stopped the son of an influential person from teasing his sister. That brat came back with his bodyguards and opened fire on the young man. There were witnesses but after a few case, the murderer was out of jail. As he was closely associated with ruling party. his son not only got out but came out of jail making the V for victory sign, The media went wild and so did social media but the guy is now out of country and the family of the young man also left fearing reprisals. I wonder how nations can progress with such burdens on their souls. | |
| @dawnwrite I would like to subscribe to your suggestion that if more murderers, terrorists and rapists are hanged every month, the crime rate would significantly drop. But in reality, there is not significant decline of crime rate. What does it mean? Death penalty doesn’t contribute much for the reduction of crime commissions.

| @swalia I have heard that gruesome, ganged rape of that teenage girl who is a nurse. You’re right it too several years to catch those rapists and one who is a minor, just served a correctional imprisonment which his crime is not fully compensated. That is the hole of the law. The crime couldn’t be satisfied though it has been served for the penalty, but in reality it is not sufficient to repay the crime committed. | |

I think if news channel tell names and crimes of people awarded death penalty at prime time news, people will be afraid of the law. all we get to hear is how the rich and influential, our business tycoons and politicians get away with breaking the law all the time and no one can get in their way. | |

Corrupt politicians and the rich & the powerful think they can get away with anything. Even if someone musters the courage of raising their voice against the injustice met to them, the case would be dragged for years in court, witnesses would be bought or threatened & silenced and eventually the criminal will be released for the lack of evidence or at the most get to serve a few years in prison where they would lead a life as in a five star hotel…all thanks to their influence and money.

| @dawnwriter, let’s point out this way that there are two sides of the coins. In fairness to those criminals especially the rapists. First, the man generally has no intention to rape the girl for he’s afraid to do it. But the situation so warrants it, due to the seductive appearance of the girl like wearing a sexy dress, wearing a skirt above the knee. Meaning, it is the situation that rape should be committed because of that. Secondly, due to too much exposure to pornography materials, lewd shows and movies. The individual may be tempted to practice on what he has seen. He wants to satisfy his lust for that matter. Now we know as to how, whether to condemn the rapist or not, to impose the death penalty or not.
