I know it’s passed it’s time, but I just want to know what your thoughts are on that movie?

or have you read the book?

To be honest, I’m not a fan of fanfiction and learning about 50 Shades of Grey actually made me think that my choice of not liking fanfiction was the right thing. It’s not a bad story but it is indeed premature and too predictable. I downloaded an Ebook copy of it as well as the movie but I couldn’t get past 5 pages and I skipped through the whole movie as well. So I thought, what was the hype all about?

I hope I’m not being too sarcastic but the book itself was not good enough to even have a trilogy. It was in my opinion poorly made and I can’t help but imagine (while reading it) a preteen’s voice telling me her pubertal imagination of what her thoughts were about BDSM.

I guess, it was because back in highschool, I read Anne Rice’s Series “Sleeping Beauty Trilogy”. So when I came across 50 Shades, to me it was pretty disappointing.

I would love to read the Sleeping Beauty Trilogy of Anne Rice. I haven’t read the book of 50 Shades of Grey even with all the hype it has before. I don’t want to judge but when I am seeing someone holding a book like it, it made me think something. I don’t want to clarify, though.I saw the film and I never get excited either, I understand what is happening though it does not leave me very thrilled. Maybe I love suspense movie and novels more that is why it did not hook me or anything like that.

I did not want to read it at first just because of all the hype. But I admit, I did read all 3 of the books and I really liked it even though I do not go for the romance type of books. I liked the story and did not read it for the sex in it. I have read one of the Anne Rice books in that Trilogy and yes 50 shades was not as good as that, but then she is such a great writer in all her genres. I never saw the 50 shades movie though because I did not think the actors were the right ones. I had already conceived an image of what the main characters looked like from the book and just could not think that the movie would do the book justice. I am sure a lot of people liked it, but I was not one of them.

I have really mixed feelings about the whole 50 Shades phenomenon. It’s not that I’m at all ambivalent about the sex and violence in this story. It’s more that as a writer I’m pleased to see someone go from writing fan fiction and self-publishing, to being an international success.

I have never read the book or seen the movie. Two things turned me off: 1) writing friends who had read it said the prose was terrible, and 2) there’s a lot of controversy about the power imbalance in the relationship between the two main characters.

Sex without love doesn’t bother me at all. In fact, it can be great! Similarly, I can understand why some people enjoy BDSM. But it’s my understanding that the relationship in 50 Shades is abusive, rather than dominant-submissive. I don’t like the idea that people are celebrating an unhealthy relationship, and mistaking the abuse portrayed for some sort of exploration of sexuality.

I think maybe the “Mommy Porn” crowd ought to try reading 9-1/2 Weeks, if that’s their kink. Or maybe Lady Chatterley’s Lover. I couldn’t say if the Anne Rice erotica is any good, because I’ve just never cared for her writing. But I’m sure there is a lot of better erotica out there…

Thanks for all the insightful comments guys! And yes, I agree that there’s nothing good about celebrating an abusive relationship. And I guess that’s also pretty much why I didn’t like the book or the story itself. The experimentation and curiosity of the main character is not something to be admired; it was more of letting another exploit her weakness.

I bought the entire set of 50 shades trilogy as it was such a success. But these have been the only books I have regretted spending money on till date. The novels were trash. There was no story but simple porn in disguise of fiction. I will never recommend 50 shades to anyone. It’s simply a wastage of time and money.
