He was a blind old man aged about 60 or 70 walking through hustle and bustle of the congested bazar, selling various articles of daily use.
Standing at some distance I watched him intently. There appeared on his wrinkled face a lovely smile. The shopkeepers and vendors turned round to have a look at him.
He stood motionless for a moment and then with one leg forward and the other backwards, raising his voice to the highest pitch, he cried:
O my God! Give me a one thousand rupee note.
(Rupee is Pakistani Currency and 1000 rupees are equal to some 10 USD approx.)
A young man stopped, searched in his pocket and gave him a one hundred rupee note.
The old man first put the note on his palm for measurement and then said: This note is not meant for me. My demand is 1000 rupees.
Come…hurry up and take it. It is for you. You go and buy yourself some brinjals and eggs as they make a good curry. The crowd laughed and the young man laughed too. He returned the note to the young man.
Many people came to help him but he did not accept their offer. He once again showed his peculiar smile, and announced:
I have asked God Almighty for a one thousand rupee note. So you guys please do not interfere in the matter between Him and me.
A fashionable suited booted man handed over some amount to him saying that it was rupees one thousand. The old man rejected the offer and said: You see I am busy. I have requested God Almighty for a one thousand rupee note. I don’t find any time to count these small notes. He will definitely bless me.
An old man gave him a one thousand rupee note. The crowd cheered. He felt the note in his hands and rejected it saying that it was old and shabby.
He further remarked how could the Creator of the universe send him an old shabby note.
The crowd murmured, giving their opinions. Most of them opined that he should have accepted the note. They were amazed to see the behavior of the old man. They were surprised to see that old man.
A lady who had stopped to see what was going on, approached him and said:
Dear sir, your demand has been granted, so you please have it. The old man took the note, felt it in his hands and smiled.
The people also enjoyed the occasion. He did convey some great lesson to everybody.
