Two Indian Rio 2016 Athletes choosen for India’s highest sports medal Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award

Olympics is the greatest sporting arena. Any medals at this arena makes a man or woman or a team’s name.
Yet sometimes, one might not win medals, but make a mark, even in missing the medal. One example was Milkha Singh in 1960 Rome Olympics. Then, P.T.Usha in 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Both missed the Bronze medal in their respective Athletics races(both 400 M if I recall correctly).
In 2012 London Olympics, the Indian contingent won six medals.
For the 2016 Rio Olymnpics, many athletes qualified and the Indian contingent strength was 100+, the highest so far(I think either the figure was 115 or 135, but I do not recall correctly).

The expectations were quite high for medals. But overall, many of the medal contenders bowed ut early. Some fought well, like Indian Hockey team, Abhinav Bindra etc, but India ended up with two medals(as of 21 Aug morning I am aware of).
Yet we have had two athletes(and probably medal winners too now)- Dipa Karmakar and Jitu Rai, who have been nominated for India’s highest sporting medal- The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.

Dipa Karmakar is the first Gymnast to appear for India in last 52 years(and I thought she was the first!).
She is 23 years old, and qualified for the final of the Vault event where she finished fourth with a score of 15.006, way above her previous best but missed the bronze medal by just 0.150 points.

She had earlier, in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, became the first Indian woman gymnast to win a medal, as she had won a bronze medal.
She also won bronze at the Asian Championships in Hiroshima in 2014, and in 2015, she apart from winning five gold medals at the National Games in Kerala, also won a bronze medal at the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Japan.

Her achievement is outstanding and I feel she can win a medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
Then, we have Jitu Rai, ranked third in the world in the men’s 10m air pistol. He also missed narrowly but was the only Indian shooter apart from Abhinav Bindra to make it to the final of their events.
I think, now P.V.Sindhu with her silver medal, and Sakshi Malik with her bronze too will be strong contenders for the sports award.

    • I love watching the Olympic competitions, although I confess that if I don't see a participant from the USA, I usually don't watch. However, one has to admire all of those athletes no matter which country they come from. They have a spirit that reaches for the sky. You can't fault them for that! So even though I'm American, I say … Go India!! :)

    • We should be proud of those who make great achievements, Athletes, Educators, and other achievers. That's great that you've chosen to acknowledge the deserving athletes and I'm sure they're grateful for your acknowledgements of their achievements. Winning any type of medal is something to be grateful. Congratulations to all those who are determined to achieve in some way.

    • @cmoneyspinner Even I like athletes who perform well from whatever country they may be- whether it is a Canadian, Australian, South Korean, Sri Lankan, American, Russian or an Indian, but yes with some bias for an Indian.

@tiki33 and the Olympics winners motivate us too.

    • i once was addict to olympic games but now no, i think its not wow, i feel they just repeat things over and over, sure i wish all the best to all but still i like to watch movies better and enjoy day at home with family more than that games and though i like some of the games i dont find it good
