If we rewind to mid and late 1980s and up to 1996/97, Bollywood movies were first multi-starrer movies with preference for action movies, thrillers and even melodramas had some action.
We had combinations like Sunny Deol, Chunky Pandey; Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor, Dharmendra and other folks. Even Amitabh Bacchan used to star in company of stars like Rishi Kapoor, Govinda, Sunny Deol etc.
Then, we had movies of stars like Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan, Suniel Shetty, Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt, with single action hero, with occasional a senior star or another co-actor.
Some had action, others had violent or senseless action.
However, since last 10 odd years and specially last 4/5 years, it looks that people have so hectic and stressful lives that on cine screens, they want to watch movies that are not too heavy. True, realistic movies have also had good runs, but light and fun filled movies have their own appeal.
One such light hearted movie is 2014 movie Khoobsurat starring Sonam Kapoor along with Fawad Afzal Khan, Kirron Kher and Ratna Pathak.
Khoobsurat is a one time watch movie, filled with situational humor. Briefly, the story is that a physiotherapist played by Sonam Kapoor works for an IPL team. Her services are in need by a Royal family whose patriarch(King)’s legs are failing him.
She encounters his strict wife Queen Nirmala Devi Rathore (Ratna Pathak) and her son Yuvraj Vikram Singh Rathore (Fawad Afzal Khan).
She gets close to Vikram, but the queen dislikes her. There are twists and turns, and the physiotherapist gets the king’s condition to improve, and in the end, the queen also becomes fun loving.
Sonam Kapoor’s mother in the movie Kirron Kher entertains with her typical witty performance.
One of the songs of the movie “Abhi toh Party Shuru Hui Hai” became a big hit.
I feel while the movie has very less resemblance to the Rekha starrer Khoobsurat of 1980s, this movie is apt for today’s time and for a fun filled watching.

Khoobsurat is, in essence, a romantic comedy and is one that works even without the Disney banner. What that name lends to the film is assisting the audience in their suspension of disbelief and making the larger than life characters seem believable.
Yes, the film is predictable, and recycles well known rom com and fairytale tropes, but the packaging is in such shiny and colourful paper that one is enthusiastic to unwrap it and see what lies in store. The result is a film that is surprisingly layered and feel-good in every sense of the word.
At one point during the film Sonam’s Milli tells Fawad’s Vikram that he does not look like a prince at all. That is the first point (of many) during the film where the viewers question her sanity.
Fawad is the spoonful of sugar that makes the slightly bitter Milli medicine go down, in an utterly delightful way. Regal, lethally charming, debonair and every other variation of tall-dark-and-handsome that you can think of, Fawad’s Prince Viku is the knight in shining armour of every girl’s dreams, and he doesn’t look half bad with the armour off too.
Bollywood is going to want to keep this one, because he puts all their Ranveers and Ranbirs to shame, but sorry guys – this one’s ours. Find another Khan to take over Shahrukh, Aamir and Salman’s throne, but good luck finding one that sits it so well, and so naturally.
