Simple Homemade Toys are Better

Children see playing is a SERIOUS business.

When we as parents see them playing all day is a childish

game, they do feel the same way too.

Seeing parents rushing here and there daily is a foolish

game in their point of view.

Children building wooden blocks or LEGO into a building,

spreading out both arms running around the playground

pretending to be airplanes, are not just a form of amusement

but training their cognitive and imagination skills for the

 future usage.

Why Simple toys are better

Do you ever noticed that your child would be playing with

simple homemade toys the longest compare to complicated

store bought toys?

This doesn’t prove that your child doesn’t have the ability to

play with the complicated toys.

It is just that with a simple homemade toy, he can create so

much imaginations that are beyond our thoughts.

He can turn a simple toy to 10 or 20 type of different type

games or pretend vehicles that he could play for hours

 throughout the whole week.

Simple Toys vs Store bought toys

For example, 2 different type of toys.

One is made from metal painted with a whole set of race

track and remote control while the other is half dozen of

empty toilet paper rolls and a plastic ball.

Surely you can’t expect your child to assemble a race track

 in minutes, right?

Not to mention that you needed at least a couple of hours to

set it up AFTER reading the instruction book!

After a while, you child gets bored of waiting.

All the previous excitement had died down after waiting more

 than 10 minutes.

However with 6 empty toilet paper rolls and a plastic ball,

he could be playing by himself without your help at all.

A simple set of homemade toy is different from the store

 bought toy.

Your child could:

Link a string of them together to form a rattling snake or

 a long train

Link a string of 2 rolls from one end to another to form a

telephone, talking through the rolls with shallow voices

Pile them up into a triangle shape and throw the ball to

score a strike like a bowling game

Pile them up in a straight line to form buildings

Kick the ball to each other

And many more. Children can create more realistic game

like this forever!

Reasons not to buy toys for your children

Some parents thought that money could buy happiness for

their children which may be wrong after all.

Yes, children are delighted to receive new toys bought from

store for birthdays, Christmas or other special occasions.

However there are pros and cons.

Price. Store bought toys especially plastic toys are

expensive. The cheapest toy may cost your 1 week of

grocery while simple homemade toys is absolutely FREE.

Safety.  Store bought toys with broken parts might hurt them

when the toys were dropped on the floor or thrown onto the

floor after an argument.

However handmade toys are safer and you can make them

again. Simple toys which you can recycle or reuse from

unwanted items are safer and you know what they are

 made of.

Toilet paper rolls, empty cereal boxes, Vitagen plastic

bottles are some great examples of items that you can find

at home.

Boredom.  A child gets bored with his new toy after a short

period of time. He would discard it to a corner after it is

broken or faulty.

This is because he can’t turn the toy into a new game.

However with the homemade toy, he could change it into

his new creations anytime, anywhere he wants to.

Bored of his old binocular?

Change it into a submarine or a car with the same old toilet

paper roll.

Conclusion:

I had made a pair of binoculars toy for my son when he was

6 years old.

It was made from 2 toilet paper rolls and a string attached.

He had a fun time pretending to be a detective, spying

behind curtains, cupboards, furniture and the door, lurking

 out for “suspects”.

Now he is 9 years old, still playing with binoculars whenever

he is bored with Android games.

    • @peachpurple I completely agree, Peachy! My four kids are now ranging from just about 12-19, and they always got better use out of toys made at home. They even make toys now for their friends!

    • Wow, I never thought of making these until now - gave me a brilliant idea what to do with those paper rolls next time! I agree - kids easily get bored no matter how many toys they have. My son is constantly bored with his stuff so my husband and I decided to take some of his stuff away and keep it inside the storage. We then take it out and keep the "old" toys away to swap, LOL!

    • Buying expensive toys will be wasting money away, young kids do not like repeat toys.Nice of you, you have the talent of many things.

    • I can still remember my childhood years, simple toys are made by my uncle. He used tin cans and a piece of wood to make a toy car. He even made a sword with the use of a tree bark. My childhood years are so memorable. It is so priceless experience.
