This green engraved plaque of jade is having a height of 14 centimeters. It was belonging to the Mayan Period and is  from Central America. It was found at Teotihuacan in Mexico during 600 – 800 A.D. This exquisite plaque is one of the finest examples of Maya jade carving.

The suspension holes drilled near the top of the plaque indicate that it was worn as a personal ornament. Possibly due to its size, as a separate pectoral pendant. The design represents a Maya ruler in full ceremonial regalia sitting cross-legged on a throne. His head is shown in the profile, while his body faces to the front.

He wears an elaborate plumed colorful headdress incorporating part of the head of a monstrous animal but colorful.  It was worn as that showed power.  He is richly decorated with personal ornaments, many of which would have been made of jade. These include ear flares, a bar pectoral, wristlets, anklets and an impressive belt with a mask.

On his left arm he wears a war shield bearing the image of the Jaguar God of the Underworld. The king inclines slightly to the right towards an attendant and is being informed of some detail by the attendant. A scroll issues from his mouth indicating either speech or song. Which shows communication and music were much part of the kingdoms ethos. All in all a colorful interesting green jade engraved plaque which reveals many things of those times in minute details.

It will be interesting to study the history of the Mayans, Aztec’s and the Incas and many other kingdoms which flourished in the South American continent. These details will be well documented in the history books but not much of details are known to the common man in India or in other parts of the world which are differentiated by geography and the distance from South America. A detailed study when compared to movies will be a better option to do a realistic study of this. We can learn many things from history, especially about humans and tread the right path as per today’s day and age. Do you not agree?
