Watching the Next Episode of Twin Peaks

I decided to watch Episode 1 of Twin Peaks, having waded through the ‘pilot’.

I had heard of this show, referenced here and there and for my own curiosity satisfaction, went back to the original 1990 series.   This is because I am aware that the show had been redone for a modern audience and I felt I should look at what was before moving into what it.

The pilot was over long, boring, with flashes of over acting, bad writing and left one with the bad taste in the mouth.  There’s only one honest scene in first episode; that’s when Bobby’s father gives him a good smack across the face.  Other than that, it’s one of those over done shows.

In more modern shows the writers assume the viewers have some intelligence, so don’t need to go over and over the fact that this person is repulsive.

In older shows, such as this one, the daughter of the hotel owner, for example, is clearly a psychopath, we get it from her first nasty act, we don’t need to see her any more.

The boyfriend of the murdered student, Bobby, is identical to her.  We don’t need it hammered into our heads that in this small town in America, the people are whack jobs.  The kids are raised in a kind of spoiled brat heaven where they do whatever they feel like without the slightest fear of punishment or limitation.

Just as in the pilot, the last scene is idiotic fantasy.   A completely pointless step into nonsense without any reason or rhyme.

How this show became a hit is not apparent on these two viewings.   I’m not sure I’ll want to see another episode.

When a program is ‘over the top’ in acting or action, today, people are less impressed.  The underplayed innuendo, the glance, the bits of information to make a plot are better than people flying off the handle and dancing into insanity.
